Exploring Nature in Aurora, CO: A Local's Perspective

Discovering the Great Outdoors
As a local of Aurora, CO, I am constantly in awe of the natural beauty that surrounds us. From breathtaking mountain views to tranquil lakes, there is no shortage of scenic spots to explore. For families visiting on vacation, I highly recommend taking advantage of our city's outdoor offerings and immersing yourselves in nature. Not only is it a great way to stay active and get some fresh air, but it also allows for quality bonding time with loved ones. So grab your hiking shoes and let's embark on a nature-filled adventure together! Hiking at Cherry Creek State Park
One of my favorite outdoor spots in Aurora is Cherry Creek State Park. This 4,000-acre park offers a variety of activities for all ages, but hiking is definitely a must-do. With over 35 miles of trails, you can choose to go for a short leisurely walk or challenge yourself with a longer hike. The trails are well-maintained and provide stunning views of the Rocky Mountains. Along the way, you may even spot some of the park's resident wildlife such as deer and rabbits. Pro tip: bring a picnic and stop at one of the many designated scenic areas for a break and a delicious meal surrounded by nature. Wildlife Watching at Morrison Nature Center
For families interested in learning more about the wildlife in Aurora, a visit to Morrison Nature Center is a must. This nature preserve is home to a variety of animals, birds, and insects. It is a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, perfect for a quiet stroll or bird-watching. Families can also sign up for guided educational programs and learn about the importance of preserving our natural habitats. Plus, the children will love getting up close and personal with some of the center's resident animals. Boating at Quincy Reservoir
On a warm summer day, there is nothing more enjoyable than spending time at Quincy Reservoir. This 160-acre man-made lake offers boating and fishing activities, making it a popular spot for families. You can rent kayaks, paddleboats, and fishing gear at the on-site concession stand and spend the day out on the water. For those who prefer to stay on land, there are beautiful picnic areas and hiking trails surrounding the lake. Keep an eye out for the abundant wildlife that calls Quincy Reservoir home. Bird's Eye View at Mount Evans
If you and your family are up for a short drive outside of Aurora, I highly recommend heading to Mount Evans for a truly unforgettable experience. At an elevation of 14,271 feet, it is the highest paved road in North America and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The drive alone is worth it, but I highly encourage stopping at the summit and taking a short hike to the peak for an even more stunning view. Just make sure to bring a jacket, as it can get quite chilly at the top! A Natural Escape from the City
From hiking to boating to wildlife watching, there are endless ways to explore and experience nature in Aurora, CO. As a local, I am grateful to live in a city that values and preserves its natural surroundings. I hope that families visiting on vacation will also take the time to appreciate and immerse themselves in the beauty of our great outdoors. So come on, join us locals in exploring nature in Aurora – I promise it will leave you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and in awe of our magnificent world.
