Tasting Your Way Through Yakima: Exploring the City's Growing Craft Beer Scene

Discovering the Local Beer Scene
Yakima may be known as the "Fruit Bowl of the Nation" for its bountiful harvests of apples, cherries, and hops, but it's also becoming a hub for craft beer enthusiasts. With over 20 breweries in the area, there's no shortage of unique and delicious beers to try. As a local, I have had the pleasure of witnessing this booming industry first-hand and I am excited to share some of my favorite spots with you.

Exploring Downtown Yakima
A great place to start your beer adventure is in downtown Yakima. Here, you'll find the city's oldest brewery, Yakima Craft Brewing Co., which has been serving up award-winning ales since 1982. Take a stroll down Historic Front Street and pop into Bale Breaker Brewing Company, which is located on a hop farm and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Bonus tip: Make sure to try their popular Topcutter IPA, made with locally-grown hops.

Taking a Trip to the West Valley
If you're willing to venture a little further, head out to the West Valley area where you'll find a cluster of breweries in close proximity to each other. Varietal Beer Company is a must-visit for their farmhouse-style ales and cozy back patio, perfect for enjoying a cold one on a sunny day. And don't miss out on Bron Yr Aur Brewing Co., named after the Led Zeppelin song and known for their funky sours and barrel-aged beers.

Pairing Beer with Outdoor Adventures
While we're lucky to have a growing number of breweries in Yakima, we're also blessed with stunning natural surroundings. And what better way to enjoy them both than by going on a beer adventure? Grab a growler and head to the Yakima Greenway for a leisurely bike ride and a picnic along the Yakima River. Or take a day trip to the nearby Yakima Valley Hops Trail, where you can hike through hop fields and sample beers along the way.

Bringing the Family Along
One of the best things about Yakima's craft beer scene is that it's family-friendly. Many of the breweries have outdoor spaces and food trucks, making them the perfect spot for a family outing. Kids can enjoy playing games or coloring while parents sip on their flights. Some breweries even offer non-alcoholic options like homemade soda or kombucha.

Cheers to Yakima!
As a local, I never tire of exploring the city's ever-growing craft beer scene, and I hope this article has piqued your interest to do the same. Whether you're a beer connoisseur or just looking for a fun and unique family activity, Yakima's breweries have something for everyone to enjoy. So next time you visit, be sure to grab a pint and experience all that our city has to offer. Cheers!
