The Seven Sea Caves
The most famous and easily accessible of the caves is the sea cave known as Sunny Jim. You can reach this cave by walking down a set of stairs from Cave Store on the coast. But don't stop at Sunny Jim, continue down the coast and you will find six more sea caves, each with its own unique shape and name. You can either rent a kayak or go on a guided tour on a stand-up paddleboard to explore these caves up close. The guides will also provide interesting facts and history about the caves, making for a fun and educational experience.
The Children's Pool Beach
This beach is located in a protected cove with a man-made seawall giving the illusion of a pool. The waves here are very gentle, making it the perfect spot for young children to swim and play. If you’re lucky, you may even spot some harbor seals resting on the nearby rocks. Just be mindful to keep a safe distance as these are wild animals. The Children's Pool Beach is also a great spot for snorkeling, with clear waters and an abundance of marine life to discover.
Shell Beach
This small and secluded cove is a favorite among locals looking for some peace and quiet. The beach is covered in beautiful shells, making it a must-visit for any shell collector. But it's not just the shells that make this cove special; if you have a pair of water shoes, you can explore the rocky areas and discover some amazing tide pools. And if you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of an octopus or two.
The La Jolla Underwater Park
For the more adventurous family, the La Jolla Underwater Park is a must-visit. This protected marine reserve is a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkeling, with an abundance of marine life to discover. You can rent equipment or book a guided tour to explore the underwater park and get up close and personal with sea creatures such as colorful fish, sea lions, and even the occasional leopard shark.
The Coastal Walk and Mount Soledad
If exploring caves and coves is not your thing, you can still enjoy the stunning views of the La Jolla coastline by taking a walk along the coast. The Coastal Walk starts at La Jolla Shores and ends at the Scripps Pier, offering breathtaking views of the ocean and the cliffs along the way. For a more challenging hike, you can also climb Mount Soledad for panoramic views of La Jolla and San Diego.
