Taking a Stroll Through History: Exploring Prince George's Heritage Sites

Prince George, British Columbia may be best known for its breathtaking natural beauty and outdoor activities, but the city also has a rich history waiting to be discovered. As a local, I highly recommend taking a break from the hiking trails and lakes to explore the numerous heritage sites scattered throughout our charming city. From museums to historical buildings, there is something for everyone to enjoy and learn from in Prince George. So, grab your walking shoes and let's take a stroll through history together! The Exploration Place Museum and Science Centre
One of the must-visit heritage sites in Prince George is definitely The Exploration Place Museum and Science Centre. This interactive museum offers a fun and educational experience for all ages. Step back in time and learn about the First Nations people, fur traders, and gold miners who once inhabited this land. The museum also has engaging exhibits on natural history, technology, and regional wildlife. Trust me, you won't want to miss the opportunity to see live beehives, a dinosaur skeleton, and a replica of Prince George's first post office. Central BC Railway and Forestry Museum
Next on our list is the Central BC Railway and Forestry Museum. This outdoor museum showcases a variety of historical trains, logging equipment, and machinery used in the early 20th century. Kids (and adults) will love the chance to climb on and explore the different types of trains, while also learning about the significant role the railway played in the development of Prince George. The museum also has a picnic area and a miniature train ride that will surely delight the little ones. Historic Huble Homestead
For a more immersive experience, visit the Historic Huble Homestead – a restored heritage site from the early 1900s. As you walk through the pioneer buildings, you'll get a glimpse of what life was like for the early settlers in Prince George. Stop by the general store and the blacksmith shop and interact with costumed interpreters who will bring the history to life. Don't forget to try their famous homemade ice cream while you're there! Fort George Park and Ancient Forest
If you're looking for a nature-filled heritage experience, visit Fort George Park and the nearby Ancient Forest. Fort George Park, often referred to as the birthplace of Prince George, is home to several historical buildings and artifacts, including a famous old steam train. After exploring the park, take a short drive to the Ancient Forest, where you can walk along a boardwalk and see some of the oldest and largest cedar trees in the region. This one-of-a-kind experience will leave you in awe of Mother Nature's wonders. The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Station
Last but certainly not least, be sure to visit The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Station – a designated National Historic Site. This magnificent building, built in 1914, played a significant role in the growth of Prince George and the development of western Canada. The station is now home to the Prince George Railway and Forestry Museum and offers guided tours, historical exhibits, and special events throughout the year. From interactive museums to outdoor heritage sites, Prince George has so much to offer when it comes to learning about its past. These are just a few of the many historical attractions waiting to be explored by families visiting our city. So, next time you plan a trip to Prince George, make sure to include a stroll through our rich history in your itinerary. Trust me, it will be an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
