The Fascinating History of DuBois, PA: A Local's Perspective

The Early Days
Dubois, Pennsylvania is a charming small town with a rich and interesting history. Situated in the rolling hills of Clearfield County, this town was founded in 1860 as a lumbering community. The vast forests and rivers provided an abundance of resources for the growing town and it quickly became a hub of activity. But it wasn't until the discovery of coal in the 1870s that Dubois truly began to thrive. Coal mining became the primary industry and with it, the town's population skyrocketed.

Boomtown Days
The early 20th century saw DuBois at the height of its prosperity. From the 1880s to the 1920s, the coal industry flourished and the town became known as the "Bituminous Capital of the World". The influx of wealth and population led to the construction of many grand mansions and buildings that still stand today. Take a stroll down Millionaire's Row on historic Brady Street and you will be transported back in time to the lavish days of the coal boom.

The DuBois Brewery
One of the lesser-known but equally fascinating parts of DuBois' history is its role in the brewing industry. The DuBois Brewery was founded in 1881 and was one of the largest regional breweries in the state. Its flagship beer, DuBois Pilsener, was known for its high quality and was shipped all over the East Coast. Sadly, the brewery closed its doors in 1972, but its legacy lives on as a reminder of DuBois' past prosperity.

The Great Fire of 1888
No discussion of DuBois' history would be complete without mentioning the Great Fire of 1888. This devastating event, which destroyed a large portion of the town, resulted in DuBois being rebuilt with more durable brick and stone buildings. The area that was once a bustling center of commerce and wealth was restored to its former glory, and today serves as a hub for local businesses and restaurants.

Preserving Our History
As a local, I feel a deep sense of pride and connection to the history of DuBois. That's why it's so important for us to preserve and share our town's story with visitors. The DuBois Area Historical Society offers tours, exhibits, and educational programs that bring the past to life for all ages. And don't forget to stop by the E.D. Reinmiller Museum, home to the Dubois Area Historical Society, for a fascinating look at the town's history.

So next time you visit DuBois, take a moment to appreciate the town's rich history and the hardworking people who built it. From its humble beginnings as a lumbering community to its thriving days as a coal boomtown, DuBois has a story that is truly captivating for all generations. We invite you to discover it for yourself and experience the charm and character of this historic Pennsylvania town.
