As a local, I have had the pleasure of experiencing some of the best outdoor activities that this city has to offer. Here are my top recommendations for those visiting for the first time.
Hiking in the Apalachicola National Forest
With over 571,000 acres of forests and wetlands, the Apalachicola National Forest offers a wide range of hiking trails for all levels. One of my personal favorites is the Fort Braden Trail, a 6-mile loop that takes you through beautiful pine flatwoods and ends in a serene cypress swamp. This trail is perfect for bird watching and taking in the peaceful sounds of nature. For a shorter hike, I would recommend the Sinks Trail, a 0.5-mile loop that leads you to a unique geological formation known as the "sinks", where water disappears into the ground. Don't forget to bring bug spray and plenty of water on your hike!
Kayaking on the Wakulla River
Just a short drive from Tallahassee is the Wakulla River, where visitors can rent kayaks and paddle through crystal clear water surrounded by lush greenery and diverse wildlife. You may even be lucky enough to spot manatees, alligators, and a variety of birds along the way. There are several local outfitters that offer guided tours or kayak rentals for those who want to explore on their own. No kayaking experience is necessary as the river is calm and easy to navigate.
Relaxing at Maclay Gardens State Park
For a more leisurely outdoor experience, head to Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park. This hidden gem features picturesque gardens, a peaceful lake, and several trails to explore. Take a stroll through the gardens and admire the colorful flowers and beautiful landscapes, then have a picnic by the lake or rent a paddle boat to explore the serene waters. The park also hosts several events and festivals throughout the year, so be sure to check their calendar before planning your visit.
Fishing at Lake Talquin
If you're an avid fisher or just looking for a relaxing day by the water, be sure to visit Lake Talquin. Located just a short drive from Tallahassee, this lake offers some of the best bass fishing in the state. You can also rent a boat from the state park and explore the lake's coves and inlets. For those who prefer to stay on land, there are picnic areas and a fishing pier available as well. Just be sure to have your fishing license handy!
