The Rich History of Forrest City

The Founding of Forrest City
Forrest City, Arkansas may seem like a small and quiet town, but it holds a rich history that dates back to the 1800s. The city was founded in 1870 and was named after Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The town was built on the site of a former rail stop and quickly became a bustling commercial center for the surrounding region. Today, Forrest City still maintains its small-town charm while embracing its past.

Antebellum Plantations
For those interested in history and architecture, Forrest City has several antebellum plantations that offer a glimpse into the city's past. The most famous plantation is the Cedar Grove Plantation, which was built in the 1850s and is now open for tours. Visitors can explore the plantation's main house, slave cabins, and gardens while learning about the lives of the plantation's residents. Other plantations in the area include the no longer standing James-Brown House and the still standing La Grange Plantation.

Civil War History
As a town named after a Confederate General, it's no surprise that Forrest City has a strong connection to the Civil War. The town was occupied by Union troops during the war and was the site of several military engagements. Visitors can visit historical markers and monuments commemorating these events, including a statue of General Forrest himself. The local museum also houses a collection of artifacts from the Civil War era.

The Blues Trail
Forrest City is a stop on the Mississippi Blues Trail, a route that highlights significant locations and artists in the history of blues music. This town was home to several musicians of the genre, including Sunnyland Slim and Sonny Boy Williamson II. Visitors can follow a self-guided tour and explore sites such as the former location of the Bradley Lounge, a popular juke joint where many blues musicians performed.

Preserving History for Generations to Come
Forrest City takes great pride in preserving its history for future generations to learn from and appreciate. The city has a Historical Preservation Commission, which works to protect and maintain historical landmarks and sites. The commission also organizes events, such as the annual Heritage Festival, where visitors can experience the rich history of the town through music, food, and traditional crafts. By preserving its past, Forrest City is able to share its unique heritage with visitors from all around the world.
