Seven-Foot Knoll Lighthouse
Built in 1855, Seven-Foot Knoll Lighthouse is the oldest surviving screw-pile lighthouse in Maryland and one of the few remaining lighthouses of its type in the country. It is also the first lighthouse in the state to be automated, meaning that it was the first to be operated without the need for a resident keeper. This feature revolutionized lighthouses across the country and allowed them to become more efficient and cost-effective.
Today, visitors can tour this iconic lighthouse and learn about its rich history as they climb the spiral staircase to the top where they can take in beautiful views of the Inner Harbor and the Chesapeake Bay. The lighthouse also features a museum with exhibits showcasing the tools and techniques used by lighthouse keepers in the 19th century.
