The House of the Seven Gables
Originally built as a two-room home, The House of the Seven Gables has undergone numerous renovations and additions over the years, resulting in its distinctive appearance today. Perhaps the most notable owner of the house was Susanna Ingersoll, who was the inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel of the same name. Hawthorne's cousin, Ingersoll also inherited the home and turned it into a popular tourist attraction in the 19th century. Through her efforts, the house was preserved and opened to the public as a historic site, making it one of the oldest attractions of its kind in the United States.
