Manzanar

Manzanar was once a bustling town in the desert of California, attracting hundreds of visitors each year. However, its history holds a dark and important chapter in the story of the United States. During World War II, Manzanar was one of ten internment camps where Japanese-Americans were forcibly relocated and imprisoned by the US government. This was a result of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066, which deemed Japanese-Americans a threat to national security. Over 11,000 people, mostly American citizens, were forced to leave behind their homes, businesses, and possessions to live in the barren, desolate landscape of Manzanar. For tourists and visitors, Manzanar serves as a powerful and sobering reminder of a time in our nation's history when innocent people were unjustly treated. The site has been preserved and turned into a National Historic Site, allowing visitors to walk through the barracks, mess halls, and gardens that were once filled with the daily lives of those incarcerated. Exhibits and interactive displays provide insight into the experiences of Japanese-Americans during this time and the lasting impact it had on their lives. Manzanar serves as a reminder to never repeat the mistakes of the past and to always stand up for the rights and freedoms of all individuals. So, while Manzanar may not be a typical tourist attraction, it offers an important lesson in history and a chance to reflect on our values as a nation.
