Carnton
During the war, Carnton served as a makeshift hospital for hundreds of wounded soldiers. The plantation owner, John McGavock, and his wife, Carrie, opened up their home to treat and care for the injured. Tragically, the McGavocks lost four of their five children in the span of four years, making their contributions to the war effort even more significant. Visitors can tour the grounds, see the restored medical office and kitchen, and visit the McGavock family cemetery, where many soldiers were buried during the war.
