The Perfect Family Day in the Great Outdoors
As a resident of Grand Forks, North Dakota, I am often asked by visitors what there is to do in our small but charming city. My immediate answer is always to spend a day exploring the Greenway – a 2,200-acre stretch of natural beauty that runs through the heart of Grand Forks. Perfect for families of all ages, the Greenway offers endless opportunities to connect with nature, learn about the local history, and create unforgettable memories. The Greenway's History and Importance
The Greenway has been an integral part of Grand Forks for more than 100 years. In the late 1800s, city planners had the foresight to set aside this land along the Red River for public use and enjoyment. Today, the Greenway is not only a designated park but also a flood control system that protects the city from the unpredictable waters of the Red River.
Begin Your Journey at Lincoln Drive Park
There are multiple access points to the Greenway, but my personal favorite is Lincoln Drive Park – a spacious park with ample parking, picnic areas, and a playground. From here, you can choose to walk, bike, or take a leisurely stroll down the winding pathways that meander through the Greenway. Along the way, you'll encounter various points of interest, including a serene Japanese garden, a replica of Lewis and Clark's fort, and the stunning floral displays at the Point Garden.
Experience the Great Outdoors
For the more adventurous families, there are opportunities for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking at several of the Greenway's boat launches. You can also rent equipment from local vendors and spend a fun-filled day on the river. For a unique experience, I recommend taking a family horseback riding lesson at the W.H.Tiechert Equestrian Center, located in the heart of the Greenway.
Learn and Play at the Nature Center
Tucked away in the Greenway, you'll find the Turtle River State Park Nature Center – a hidden gem for families with young children. The nature center offers interactive exhibits, educational programs, and hands-on activities that help kids learn about the natural world. During the summer months, the center also hosts a variety of nature-themed events, including guided nature walks, bird-watching tours, and a popular butterfly festival.
End Your Day With a Picnic
After a day of exploring the Greenway, there's no better way to end it than with a picnic. The Greenway has many beautiful picnic areas, but my favorite is the Amphitheater Overlook – a scenic spot with breathtaking views of the river and the city skyline. Pack a basket of your family's favorite snacks, and enjoy a peaceful meal surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature.
In Grand Forks, the Greenway is more than just a park; it's a way of life. I invite you and your family to come and experience this beautiful natural oasis for yourselves. Whether you're looking for a quiet and peaceful day or an action-packed adventure, the Greenway has something for everyone. Make sure to bring your camera, as you'll want to capture the memories of this unforgettable family day in the great outdoors.
