Mattoon, Illinois is located in Coles County and is approximately 57 miles south of Champaign and 57 miles southeast of Decatur. A must see in the area is Lake Mattoon. Head on over and make camp on either the East Campground or West Campground. Then enjoy a day sunbathing at Lake Mattoon Public Beach. This area has become a popular recreational site for locals and tourists with fishing and boating available almost year round. Another noteworthy place to visit nearby is Lake Paradise. Boats are allowed on the lake, but a strict "no wake" lake with no skiing, knee boarding or tubing is allowed. Still a great place to enjoy the beauty of nature in a peaceful setting.
