Palatka, Florida (pronounced puh-lat-kuh) is located in Putnam County and approximately 60 miles south of Jacksonville. The city is well known for its local festivals, notably the Florida Azalea Festival and Blue Crab Festival. A popular destination for locals and eco-tourists is the Ravine Gardens, State Park. The park features two ravines up to 120 feet deep and banks up to 45 degrees. A paved 1.8-mile road wind around the ravine where motorists and cyclists view the magnificent gardens. The azalea gardens peak between late January to March during its rolling bloom. Roll on over to another hiking spot, Rice Creek Conservation Area. Part of the property area includes the Florida National Scenic Trail where hiking, bicycling and horseback riding are very popular. Another trail serves as a wildlife corridor, connection several large natural areas for the Florida Black Bear, White-Tailed Deer, Turkeys, River Otters and a diverse population of birds.
