Danvers State Hospital

Danvers State Hospital, located in Danvers, Massachusetts, was once a sprawling psychiatric facility that operated from 1878 to 1992. It was originally called the State Lunatic Hospital at Danvers, and was founded under the Kirkbride Plan, a system of mental health treatment that aimed to provide a peaceful and therapeutic environment for patients. The hospital was a self-sufficient community, with its own water tower, greenhouse, farm, and cemetery. Today, the site is known as the Danvers State Insane Asylum and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

At its peak, it housed over 2,000 patients, making it one of the largest psychiatric facilities in the country.
