As a lifelong resident, I am excited to share with you the upcoming events and festivities happening in our charming town to celebrate Texas Independence Day. Our town is small but full of pride, and we can't wait for you and your family to join us in commemorating this significant event in Texas history. History of Texas Independence Day
On March 2nd, 1836, the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed right here in Gonzales, making history and marking the start of the Texas Revolution. The town's iconic slogan, "Come and Take It," refers to the first shot fired during the Texas Revolution against Mexican troops who came to seize a cannon. This event ignited the battle for Texas independence, and every year, we celebrate it in a grand manner. The Annual Come and Take It Festival
The highlight of our Texas Independence Day celebrations is the annual Come and Take It Festival. This year marks the 183rd anniversary, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever. The festival runs for three days, from February 28th to March 2nd, and features a variety of family-friendly activities such as a parade, live music performances, a carnival, food vendors, and more. The festival's main event is the re-enactment of the "Come and Take It" cannon firing, which is always a crowd-pleaser. Visiting the Historic Sites
For history buffs, a visit to Gonzales is incomplete without stopping by the historic sites that played a pivotal role in the Texas Revolution. Take a tour of the Gonzales Memorial Museum, where you can see artifacts, weapons, and documents from the revolution. The Lynchburg Ferry Bridge, where the first battle of the Texas Revolution was fought, is another must-visit attraction. You can also explore the Gonzales Hushpuckena Museum, which tells the story of Gonzales's founding and its early years. Foods and Drinks to Try
No visit to Texas is complete without indulging in some mouth-watering Texan foods and drinks. Be sure to try some authentic Texas BBQ, loaded with smoky flavors and served with all the fixin's. You can also sample some classic Tex-Mex dishes such as tacos, nachos, and enchiladas. Wash it all down with a cold glass of sweet tea, a staple drink in Texas. And of course, you can't leave Gonzales without trying some homemade pecan pie, a southern specialty. Wrap Up
As a local, I can guarantee that celebrating Texas Independence Day in Gonzales will be an unforgettable experience for you and your family. The festival, historic sites, and delicious food are just some of the reasons why I am proud to call this town my home.
