Exploring Kingston's Historic Downtown

Kingston Travel Guide Discovering Local History and Culture
Kingston, Ontario may be known as a university town and a hub for sailing and outdoor activities, but its historic downtown is not to be overlooked. As a local, I can confidently say that touring this area is a must for anyone visiting Kingston for the first time. The streets are lined with charming heritage buildings, fascinating museums, and unique shops and restaurants.
Strolling Along the Waterfront
One of the best ways to start exploring downtown Kingston is by taking a stroll along the waterfront. The city's location on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River gives it a beautiful waterfront area with picturesque views. As you walk, you'll pass by historic Fort Henry, the iconic Kingston City Hall, and various marinas. In the summer, you can also catch live music and events at Confederation Park.
Visiting the Market Square
Located in the heart of downtown, Market Square is a hub of activity and a popular gathering place for both locals and visitors. This vibrant square is home to a variety of events throughout the year, including outdoor movie screenings, farmers' markets, and festivals. On a sunny day, you can grab a bite to eat from one of the many food trucks and enjoy it at one of the picnic tables while taking in the bustling atmosphere.
Exploring the Historic Streets
The downtown area is filled with historic streets that are best explored on foot. The main street, Princess Street, is lined with specialty shops and boutiques, as well as some of the city's oldest buildings. Another must-visit is Brock Street, named after Sir Isaac Brock, a renowned military leader during the War of 1812. This street is home to the beautifully restored Grand Theatre, where you can catch a show or tour the historic building.
Learning at the Museums
For those interested in history, downtown Kingston is a goldmine. The area is home to several museums, including the Museum of Health Care, which showcases the history of medical care in Canada, and the Kingston Penitentiary Museum, where you can learn about life inside one of Canada's most notorious prisons. Families with children will also enjoy visiting the PumpHouse Steam Museum, where they can see steam engines in action and learn about Kingston's industrial past.
Indulging in Local Cuisine
After a day of exploring downtown Kingston, there's no better way to refuel than by trying some of the city's delicious local cuisine. You can find everything from seafood and pub fare to international dishes and gourmet options. For a true local experience, I recommend trying some poutine, a Canadian classic dish of fries, gravy, and cheese curds. And for dessert, don't miss out on a classic BeaverTail, a fried dough pastry topped with your choice of sweet toppings.
No matter what your interests may be, downtown Kingston has something to offer for everyone. From historic sites and museums to outdoor activities and delicious food, this area is a must-visit for anyone exploring Kingston for the first time. As a local, I am proud to call this charming and vibrant downtown my home, and I am always excited to share its rich history and culture with visitors.
