Sandston was established in the late 1800s as a railroad town, and it quickly became a hub for freight and passenger trains. In fact, our town was originally called "Highland Springs Junction" due to its location where the Richmond and Allegheny Railroad lines intersected. Today, the historic Sandston Railroad Museum stands as a reminder of our town's past role in the railroad industry. Aviation Heritage
Aside from being known for its bustling railroad industry, Sandston also has a rich aviation history. During World War II, the town was home to the Richmond Army Air Base, which trained pilots for the United States Army Air Corps. Today, the base has been converted into Richmond International Airport, but the Sandston Air Station Heritage Park still honors the brave men and women who served during the war.
