Exploring the History of Astoria, Oregon

Astoria Travel Guide Astoria's Rich Past
Astoria, Oregon is a small city with a big history. Located on the northwestern coast of Oregon, Astoria boasts a history that dates back to the early 1800s. It was originally founded as a trading post by John Jacob Astor, and the city has since become a hub for fur trade, fishing, and timber industries. As a local, I am always excited to share the fascinating history of Astoria with visitors. The Astoria Column
One of the best ways to dive into Astoria's history is by visiting the famous Astoria Column. This 125-foot tall monument was built in 1926 and stands atop Coxcomb Hill, offering unparalleled views of the city and surrounding landscape. The column is adorned with beautiful murals depicting significant events from Astoria's past. Visitors can climb the 164 steps to the top for a small fee and take in the breathtaking view while learning about the city's history. Sites to See
In addition to the Astoria Column, there are several other historical sites in Astoria that are worth a visit. The Flavel House Museum is a restored mansion that once belonged to one of Astoria's most prominent families. The museum offers a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of the city's elite in the late 1800s. The Oregon Film Museum, located in the old Clatsop County Jail, showcases Astoria's role in the film industry, including its use as a filming location for the iconic movie "The Goonies". These are just a few of the many historical sites to explore in Astoria. The Riverwalk
For a more leisurely way to learn about the city's history, I highly recommend taking a stroll along the Riverwalk. This paved path spans just over six miles and follows the Columbia River, offering stunning views of the water and the surrounding landscape. Along the way, you'll come across several interpretive panels that provide insight into Astoria's past. It's a great way to enjoy the sights and learn some interesting facts about the city. Local Delicacies
After all that exploring, you'll likely work up an appetite. Luckily, Astoria has a wide variety of delicious food options to satisfy any craving. For a taste of history, head to the Bridgewater Bistro, located in the historic Cannery Pier Hotel. The restaurant serves up fresh seafood dishes while also highlighting the city's history with its decor and menu items. Another must-try is the iconic Bowpicker Fish & Chips food truck, which has been serving up delicious fish and chips since the 1930s. Experience it for Yourself
As you can see, Astoria, Oregon has a rich history waiting to be explored by visitors of all ages. From historic sites to stunning views, there is something for everyone in this charming city on the coast. So when planning your trip, make sure to carve out some time to learn about Astoria's past. Trust me, you won't regret it. I hope to see you soon in my beautiful hometown of Astoria!
