The Chippewa River: Exploring Nature in Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant, Michigan is a charming college town located in the heart of the state. It is home to Central Michigan University and boasts a vibrant downtown filled with shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

But one of the town's best kept secrets is the Chippewa River, which winds its way through the town and offers a plethora of activities for visitors of all ages. As a local, I have spent countless hours exploring this beautiful body of water and I am excited to share some of my favorite things to do along the river.

River Trail
The river trail is a must-do for anyone visiting Mount Pleasant. This paved path runs alongside the river and offers stunning views of nature and wildlife. It is perfect for a scenic walk or bike ride, and there are several access points from different parks and neighborhoods throughout town.

Kayaking and Tubing
For those looking for a bit more adventure, kayaking and tubing down the Chippewa River is the way to go. There are several rental companies in town that offer equipment and shuttle services. The river is calm and easy to navigate, making it a great activity for families or first-timers. Plus, you'll get a unique view of the town and surrounding nature.

Fishing
Fishing enthusiasts will also find a home on the Chippewa River. The river is home to a variety of fish, including bass, pike, and bluegill. Grab your fishing gear and head down to one of the many public access points to try your luck. Just make sure you have a valid Michigan fishing license.

Bridgefest
In the summer, the town of Mount Pleasant celebrates the river with an annual event called Bridgefest. It takes place on the island in the middle of the river and includes live music, food vendors, and a tubing race. It's a fun, family-friendly event that showcases the community's love for the Chippewa River.
