The Historic Charm of Jacksonville, IL: A Local's Perspective

Jacksonville Travel Guide The History of Jacksonville
As a long-time resident of Jacksonville, IL, I am always eager to share the rich history of this charming town with visitors. Founded in 1825, Jacksonville is home to many beautifully preserved historic sites that provide a glimpse into the past. The town was once a hub for political and social change, with influential figures like Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas making their mark here. From architectural wonders to significant landmarks, Jacksonville's past is truly fascinating. Main Street Walking Tour
One of the best ways to experience the historic charm of Jacksonville is by taking a leisurely stroll down Main Street. The quaint, tree-lined streets and beautifully restored buildings will transport you back in time. Start your tour at the Governor Duncan Mansion, a Greek Revival style home that belonged to the first Governor of Illinois. From there, make your way to the Amtrak station, designed by world-renowned architect Henry Hobson Richardson. Be sure to stop at the David Strawn Art Gallery, built in 1914, which houses a vast collection of American and European art. Cultural and Architectural Gems
In addition to its rich history, Jacksonville also boasts stunning examples of architectural styles from different eras. The iconic Eli Bridge Company, located on the city's east side, is the last remaining manufacturer of Ferris wheels in the U.S. The company's first Ferris wheel was built for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. You can also visit the beautifully restored Illinois College campus, which features a mix of Gothic Revival, Victorian, and Collegiate Gothic architecture. The Spirit of Lincoln
No visit to Jacksonville is complete without learning about its connection to Abraham Lincoln. As a young lawyer, Lincoln argued cases in the city's courthouse, and his presence can still be felt today. Stop by the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Museum, which commemorates the famous debates between Lincoln and Douglas during their U.S. Senate race in 1858. You can also visit the Lincoln family tomb located in nearby Oak Ridge Cemetery, where Lincoln's wife, Mary Todd, and three of their children are buried. Annual Events
Jacksonville is home to several annual events that celebrate its history and culture. The Morgan County Fair, held every summer, has been a tradition for over 160 years, featuring agricultural exhibitions, carnival rides, and live entertainment. The annual Downtown Historic Homes Tour, organized by the Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce, allows visitors to step inside some of the town's most beautifully preserved historic homes. And for music lovers, the Jacksonville Main Street Concert Series features free outdoor concerts throughout the summer. A Destination for All Ages
As a parent, I am always looking for activities that cater to both my own interests and those of my children. Jacksonville offers a perfect balance of history and entertainment for all ages. From historic sites to outdoor events and festivals, there is something for everyone to enjoy. So whether you are a history buff, nature lover, or simply looking for a charming getaway, Jacksonville, IL is the perfect destination for your next trip.
