Exploring Limon's Rich Railroad History

History of Limon's Railroad
As a local of Limon, one of my favorite things to share with visitors is our town's rich railroad history. Located in the heart of eastern Colorado, Limon was once a bustling center for the Union Pacific Railroad. In fact, the town's name is derived from "Limon Junction," which was the designation for the location where two important railroad lines met. Today, our town is a hub for railway enthusiasts and history buffs alike, offering a glimpse into the past and present of our small community.

Union Pacific Depot Museum
The best place to start your exploration of Limon's railroad history is at the Union Pacific Depot Museum. Housed in the restored 1906 Union Pacific Depot, this museum is a treasure trove of artifacts, photographs, and stories from the town's early railroad days. Inside, you can see exhibits that showcase the daily life of railway workers, as well as the impact the railroad had on the town's growth and development. You can also take a tour of the depot, which has been beautifully preserved with its original fixtures and furniture.

Railway Park
For a more hands-on experience, make sure to visit Railway Park. Located near the depot, this outdoor park features a variety of railway equipment, including a steam locomotive, a caboose, and a railway crane. Visitors of all ages can climb aboard the train cars and explore the different compartments, while learning about the functions and history of each piece. Kids will especially enjoy the railway-themed playground, complete with a mini train to play on. Railway Park is also a popular spot for picnics and events throughout the year.

Railway Mural and Walking Tour
Stroll along Limon's Main Street and you'll find a 100-foot-long mural that pays tribute to the town's railroad past. Commissioned by the Limon Heritage Society, this colorful mural depicts different scenes from Limon's railway history and is a great photo opportunity for visitors. As you walk around town, keep an eye out for the walking tour plaques that provide interesting tidbits and historical facts about the buildings that once served as railway offices and businesses. It's a great way to blend sightseeing with learning about our town's past.

Annual Railroad Days Festival
If you happen to visit Limon in mid-June, don't miss out on the Annual Railroad Days Festival. This three-day event celebrates the town's railroad heritage with train rides, craft and food vendors, live music, and a parade. It's a fun and lively experience for the whole family, and a chance to see the town come together to honor its roots. With train whistles blowing and the excitement of the festival, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time to the golden age of Limon's railroad.
