DeKalb, IL may be known primarily as a college town, home to Northern Illinois University, but it also boasts beautiful parks and trails that are waiting to be explored. As a local, I have spent many weekends and evenings enjoying the natural beauty of this town and I am excited to share some of my favorite spots with those visiting for the first time. The city of DeKalb is home to 44 parks, providing ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. One of my personal favorites is Hopkins Park, located right next to NIU's campus. With its picturesque pond, playgrounds, and picnic areas, it is a popular spot for families and nature lovers alike. For those looking for more adventure, the Russell Woods Forest Preserve offers hiking and biking trails through lush forests and wetlands. And don't forget to make a stop at Prairie Park, where you can relax by the river and enjoy a peaceful picnic. Hitting the Trails

The most well-known is the DeKalb Nature Trail, a 4-mile path that winds through the city and offers scenic views of the Kishwaukee River. Another popular trail is the Great Western Trail, which extends for 17 miles and connects to other trails that lead to neighboring towns. No matter which trail you choose, you will be surrounded by nature and get a chance to see wildlife like birds, deer, and foxes. Outdoor Activities for All Ages
Looking for more than just a leisurely stroll? DeKalb has a variety of outdoor activities to suit every interest and age group. Young children will love the Splash Pad at Hopkins Park, while teenagers and adults can challenge themselves at the local disc golf course at Prairie Park. For those who enjoy fishing, the Kishwaukee River and some of the city's parks are stocked with a variety of fish. And during the winter months, visitors can hit the slopes at Stoney Creek Ranch, a small ski resort just a short drive from the city. Nature in the Heart of the City

The Prairie Park Wetlands is a beautiful oasis in the middle of downtown DeKalb, featuring a boardwalk that allows visitors to get up close to the plants and animals that call the wetlands home.
