Exploring the Historical Treasures of Piscataway, NJ

Piscataway Travel Guide The Rich History of Piscataway
Located in the heart of central New Jersey, Piscataway is a small township filled with a rich history dating back to the 17th century. It was first settled by the Lenape Native American tribe and was later occupied by the Dutch and English. Today, Piscataway boasts many historical treasures that offer visitors a glimpse into the past. As a local, I am proud to share some of my favorite historical sites that you must visit during your first trip to Piscataway.
The Cornelius Low House
The Cornelius Low House, also known as the Piscatawaytown Burial Ground, is a must-see attraction for history lovers. Built in the late 1700s, this Georgian-style house is one of the oldest buildings in Piscataway and has been restored to its original condition. Visitors can take guided tours of the house and learn about the Low family, who were influential in the development of the township. The surrounding burial ground is the final resting place for many early settlers and adds to the historical significance of this site.
East Jersey Olde Towne Village
Step back in time and experience life in a 19th-century village at East Jersey Olde Towne. This living history museum features several restored buildings, including a blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, and tavern. Visitors can watch costumed interpreters demonstrate daily activities and trades from the past. It's a great place to learn about the everyday life of early Piscataway residents and immerse yourself in the township's history.
The Metlar - Bodine House Museum
Another historical gem in Piscataway is the Metlar - Bodine House Museum. This 18th-century Dutch Colonial mansion was once home to some of the township's most influential families and has now been transformed into a museum. Inside, visitors can explore the rooms furnished with period pieces and learn about the house's former occupants. The property surrounding the museum also features a beautiful herb garden and walking trails.
Rutgers University
No visit to Piscataway would be complete without a stop at Rutgers University, the state's largest and oldest university. Founded in 1766, the campus is a blend of modern buildings and historic structures, including the Queen Anne-style Old Queens building and the Voorhees Mall, designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Take a walk around the campus, grab a bite to eat at one of the many dining options, and soak in the student atmosphere that has been part of Piscataway for over 250 years.
Stop by and Discover Piscataway's Rich History
Piscataway's historical sites are not only important to the township's past but also add to its charm and character. As a local, I am always excited to share the stories and significance of these sites with visitors. From the Cornelius Low House to Rutgers University, there is something for everyone to enjoy. So the next time you plan a trip to Piscataway, make sure to include these historical treasures in your itinerary to get a true taste of the township's history.
