Exploring Wilkes County's Rich History

Sugarloaf Travel Guide The Founding of Wilkesboro
Welcome to Wilkesboro, North Carolina – a charming town nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Many visitors come for the natural beauty and outdoor activities, but what they may not know is the rich history that lies within this small town. Wilkesboro was founded in 1778 and was originally called "Mulberry Fields" due to the abundance of mulberry trees on the land. It was later renamed Wilkesboro in honor of the Revolutionary War hero, John Wilkes. As a local, I am excited to share with you the fascinating history of this town and how it has shaped our community today. The Role of Wilkesboro in the Revolutionary War
During the Revolutionary War, Wilkesboro was an important location for the patriot cause. It was a major crossing point of the Yadkin River, which was a crucial transportation route for troops and supplies. The town also served as a refuge for soldiers during harsh winter months. You can learn more about this pivotal role in our nation's history by visiting the Wilkes Heritage Museum. The museum features exhibits and artifacts that tell the story of Wilkes County's involvement in the Revolutionary War. Reliving History at Old Wilkes Jail
One of my favorite places to visit in Wilkesboro is the Old Wilkes Jail. Built in 1859, it served as the county's jail until 1919. Today, it is a museum that offers a glimpse into the criminal justice system of the 1800s. You can tour the cells and see the original gallows where seven people were executed. It's a unique and educational experience for all ages. Plus, the tour guides often share interesting stories and folklore about the jail and its past occupants. Discovering the Scotch-Irish Heritage
Wilkesboro is also known for its strong Scotch-Irish heritage. The Scotch-Irish were early settlers in the area, and their influence can still be seen today. To learn more about their culture and traditions, take a trip to the Bull Hole Farm. This living history farm offers interactive experiences for visitors to learn about the daily life of early Scotch-Irish settlers. You can hear traditional songs, taste homemade treats, and even try your hand at old-fashioned chores. Preserving Local Traditions at the Apple Festival
One event that should not be missed during your stay in Wilkesboro is the annual Brushy Mountain Apple Festival. This festival has been a tradition for over 40 years and celebrates the apple harvest. It features live music, food vendors, and over 400 arts and crafts booths. You can even take a hayride through the orchard and pick your own apples. It's a fun and festive way to experience a local tradition and support our community. History Comes Alive in Wilkesboro
As you can see, Wilkesboro has a deep and diverse history that is waiting to be explored. From the founding of the town to the preservation of local traditions, there is something for everyone to enjoy. As a local, I am proud of the rich history that has shaped Wilkesboro into the charming town it is today. So, as you plan your next family vacation, make sure to add a trip to Wilkesboro to your list. You won't be disappointed!
